This is a comprehensive exam that is completed at the end of the online portion of this course. The exam aligns with the following course outcomes:
-
CLO1: Apply characteristics of the therapeutic relationship for creating a healthy foundation for a client-centered approach.
-
CLO2: Evaluate client health history to determine if massage therapy is indicated or contraindicated for the client's current state of health.
-
CLO3: Describe the emotional, physical, and physiological responses to stress that occur in the body, and the resulting symptoms, to a client in a therapeutic setting.
-
CLO 4: Explain the benefits of massage therapy at an appropriate health literacy level for a client.
The reason this is a comprehensive exam, is that the NCBTMB has specific requirements for online courses, one of which is that students must score a minimum of 80% at the end of the online course (in-person courses are by completion of hours/participation). Learners will interact with videos, readings, discussions forums and self-check assessments. These learning objectives will translate to the in-person/hands on portion of this course.

Reflection
Since massage therapy is a vocation, a significant part of being successful in school is mastering the hands-on aspect. As such, some individuals who choose this vocation may not do well with exams, or traditional types of academic assignments overall. The NCBTMB "online" courses that I have for license renewal are largely distance learning that require you to read a textbook and take an exam online or mail the exam in to the instructor. This likely is challenging for some people. I would like to make "online" more accessible. Once the course runs a few times, I will have data to make better decisions about exam questions, and even better ways the online exam can be offered. Also, since this is a hybrid course, I think having an alternative exam option available is important. This could occur during a designated time at the in-person portion of the course. This is an opportunity for students who were not able to pass the exam with two attempts. This would still meet the NCBTMB requirements and offer options for those who need it. Additionally, by reviewing the data prior to the start of the in-person training, I can adapt the lecture to immediately address any gaps. I can also reassess the online exam questions prior to the next cohort and revise accordingly.
