Discussion Questions
The discussion questions are designed to offer learners an opportunity to critically think about the effects and benefits of massage, where they are getting their information (maybe where they should be getting their information), and what they are relaying to their clients. Learners interact by viewing a video and reading three succinct but relevant readings. The discussion questions are aligned with the following:
CLO 4: Explain the benefits of massage therapy at an appropriate health literacy level for a client.
-
LO4.1: Describe the physiological, physical, and mental changes that improve with massage therapy.
Assignment Prompt
This assignment is a chart where learners identify the known effects of massage therapy on a system and the correlating benefits for the client. They then identify common techniques they use, and what specific effects those techniques produce for the client. The purpose of this assignment is to lead the learners to critically think about the techniques they use in their practice, and what effects they produce, so they can ultimately develop client-centered protocols that can address various complaints. Upon completion of this chart, students will have a reference chart of techniques and effects they produce for their personal practice.
The assignment is aligned with the following:
CLO 4: Explain the benefits of massage therapy at an appropriate health literacy level for a client.
-
LO4.1: Describe the physiological, physical, and mental changes that improve with massage therapy.
-
LO4.2: Communicate known benefits of massage therapy in layperson’s language to help a client see the benefit of receiving massage and justify a proposed protocol. (health literacy)
CLO 5: Design a client-specific massage protocol to address the complaint of stress with secondary complaint areas and relative contraindications.
Reflection
I felt that developing the discussion questions and assignment helped me have a better vision for the course, in particular how I can translate concepts from online to the in-person session. I see that the online course helps learners not only be better prepared for the course, but also helps me establish a sense of the expectations for what the in-person experience will be like. The information from the online session will also help me identify gaps that I need to address during the in-person session, as well as getting a feel for the personalities in the course so I can change my in-person teaching approach.
